Abstract:
| This report is a final product of a broad 4 year collaborative project between the Geological Survey of Canada and the British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines and Petroleum Resources initiated in 2003, and a collaborative project between Geoscience BC and the Geological Survey of Canada started in 2005. The broader project, called "Integrated Petroleum Resource Potential and Geoscience Studies of the Bowser and Sustut Basins", was multidisciplinary in scope and broad in geographic coverage, including the length and breadth of the Bowser and Sustut basins (Evenchick et al., 2003; Evenchick and Ferri, 2007). Primary activities included geological framework studies, energy resource studies, thermal history, thermal state, and petroleum resource assessment. The Geoscience BC project, called "Targeted Energy Resource Studies in the Bowser and Sustut Interior Basins of British Columbia", focused on: thermochronology of the southern Bowser Basin through apatite fission-track chronology (AFT); stratigraphic studies of the early Bowser Basin history; and digital compilation and publication of field data (Evenchick et al., 2006).
This report presents an explanation of the geological context, purpose, and sampling strategy of the AFT study followed by a report of data for 17 samples analyzed by Apatite to Zircon Inc. of Viola, Idaho, USA. The latter is reproduced from Apatite to Zircon Inc. Reports 682 and 781, and comprises a summary of the data, an explanation of laboratory and modeling procedures, and the results of modeling. Report 682 is for 14 samples from the northern basin collected in 2002 as part of the broader Bowser Basin study, and report 781 is for 3 samples collected from the southern basin in 2006 as part of the Geoscience BC project. Changes to the Apatite to Zircon Reports are limited to renumbering of chapters, sections, figures and tables to accommodate this introduction chapter, the addition of references cited in the introduction, a revised method of reporting data of standards, and correction of sample number errors in report 682 (02-FF-53 and 02-OE-42 should in all cases be 02-FF-53B, and 02-OE-42A, respectively). |
